Poster Analysis
Hunger Games
Colors
We took inspiration from the film hunger games. We looked at the different film posters produced for the film. There are two distinctive colors on this poster black and orange which both contain strong connotations . Black and orange suggest life vs. death. As black signifies darkness and death. Whereas the orange combines red with yellow. Orange it is not as empowering as red which suggests danger and anger. Whereas yellow is a bright full of joy and positive energy. On each of the characters faces there is a tint of orange this could suggest ambition and enthusiasm they each hold. This links back to the story-line where they are fighting for survival. The colour itself grabs the audience attention. The flames behind each character are of a darker orange portraying danger. Costume
Male The male characters are wearing tight fitted black t shirts. The male character on the left is showing his masculine arms folded. We see more of his skin then the other character. This could imply he holds more strength then the other male character. Female The female character is wearing a longer black jacket with strikes of grey and orange. Her long jacket takes away any femininity. However her costume is different from both male characters. |
Props
The most evident prop that can be seen in the poster is the bow and arrow. This hints to the audience what the genre of the film is. Implying an action adventure. |
Blocking
The three main characters are at the for front of the poster. With the female character placed in front of both male characters. This could imply her higher status within the film. Each character is looking serious and making eye contact directly to the camera. This makes it more dramatic as the audience are engaged with the poster. Titles
The title of the film name "Hunger games" is in the largest font on the poster. This is very important as audiences need to know the name of the film. Grabbing there attention straight away. The tag line of the poster " May the odds be ever in your favour". Is in the same orange font as the other titles on the poster. It contrasts the black backdrop. Therefore it is clear for the audience to read. The tag line itself gives the audience an indication to what the film will be about. For instances survival of the fittest. Where as the actors name are placed at the top of the poster above each character. This is very effective as its not dominating the poster and is away from the primary image. |
The Condemned
Props:
The most clear thing is that the male is once again the one with the possession of the main weapons, which are the 2 guns and the other contestants don't seem to have much in terms of weapons or anything to protect themselves. The women standing next to the man, still has her handcuffs she had on when she was thrown on to the set, showing that she is still trapped compared to the others. Blocking:
The first and most important thing is that the male character is at the front, holding the weapons and is right in front of everyone else that is on the poster, this could suggest his position within the group and shows that he is the most important and dominating. There also seems to be a lot more men on the poster than women, there are only 2 women and the rest are men, this shows a more stereotypical view in the sense that the men are more stronger and at the top .This also represents that the women are outnumbered and gives that sense of survival of the fittest and if the women is able to survive, especially when majority of the contestants are men. |
Costume
Male: -The main male at the front, has a similar costume to what we want to make our costumes look like; dirty and slightly ripped t shirt with combat trousers. This is very similar to what are characters are wearing, this costume portrays the story line slightly because it is all about adventure and fighting for survival. Female: - There is only one dominant female in this poster and as we can see, she is wearing a cropped top and also wearing the combat trousers. This gives us the idea that they are all a part of this fight for survival and her costume shows her more rough and not so much the weak and vulnerable woman, but more the strong and brave contestant. |
Title's
There are quite a few title's in this poster, there is the main title is the name of the film which is in capitals and matches the brown colour theme, which is the colour that dominates the poster. There is also the title that is at the top of the poster "10 people will fight. 9 people will die. You get to watch." This would catch the audiences eye as it its big, bold and seems to dominate most of the poster. It also gives some kind of insight to what the film is about by hinting that they will be fighting and we will be watching. This also fits with our idea, so we could consider doing something like that. Colours
The main color in this poster is brown and the color brown is very prominent in nature which is why it is representative of the earth. This could link with our poster in terms of the fact that we have dropped the contestants in a forest, where it gives that feel of dirt and nature. Brown is solid with strength and maturity, its a subtle color and therefore allows the yellow light to come through in the middle of the poster and even though its not that obvious, it signifies that little bit of hope that the contestants may have. In general, the colors in this poster are not bright and dominant but it still gives just as much as effect as a bright one would, because of the blocking and titles. |
No Country for Old Men
Colours
The colours on this poster contrast between dark and light. The poster is predominately dark from the top and bottom. Whereas most of the light is shown in the middle of the poster surrounded by the long shot of the character running away. This gives us some indication to the more positive connotations of the character as he's around the grainy yellow. Although this type of colour shown would not suggest a happy atmopshere, it could imply a sense of hope. In comparison to the image above of the close up of the male character sinister face. Which contains elements of black and grey. The colours on this postr contrast good vs evil. Blocking There are two significant images in this poster. The faded out image of the characters face and the full body shot of a male character running. However it can be argued that the primary image of the poster is the faded close shot of the male characters face. As it holds greater dominance, we are first drawn to his eyes as they are looking straight at the audience. Having this image above the running character emphasises the power he has over him. As a result the character underneath is running away from the over bearing dominance. |
Titles
The title of the film is in a large text making it clear to the audience what the film is called. Where as the actors names are placed above it, in a smaller text. Therefore suggesting there is not as much emphasises on the actors playing in the film. They do not want those titles to distract the audience from the images. However the tagline of the film is placed at the top of the poster away from any other text. This the attracts our attention to read it. It is also placed above the male characters face, this could suggest it links to his character. Costume
The costume of the character is not apparent to the audience. Instead it is portrayed as a black silhouette. Therefore there is no importance to what he is wearing. Props The male characters black silhouette portrays the character holding a long object to be a gun. Although it is not emphasised, he is also carrying another object but it is not clear to the audience what it is. |
How have these posters influenced us?
In comparison to the other posters, the layout for No Country For Old Men is completely different. We are not introduced to a selection of Characters, instead we have a dominating close up of a male characters face faded into the background. This could be due to the fact that this movie is not an action adventure unlike The Condemned or Hunger Games. Therefore they hold different conventions to those to an action adventure poster. However we took inspiration from this poster as we wanted to use the gas masked character faded into the background above the three main contestants. As it holds great significance to our story line, as the mask character represents the game show. Therefore placing it over the contestants emphasizes the control the game show has over there lives. As they all fight for survival. The hunger games used the three main characters effectively. We wanted to incorporate this to our poster, as the audience can identify the three main characters who lives
are to be effected on this game show placed on the remote island. On The Condemned poster we see long shot of characters suggesting the strength they have as we see their full bodies. Furthermore it links back to the story line where strength of each character is key into surviving under those conditions. Similarly to our story line where the characters physical ability is key in order to survive the numerous obstacles they face.

Magazine Cover Analysis
How have these magazine covers influenced us?
After researching the different types of magazines. It gives us a clearer indication to the types of conventions a magazine consists off. Therefore making it easier for us to understand the layout and what we must include in our own cover. However we believe it is important to have the title of our film in large font to catch the audience attention much like Tron legacy magazine. It allows the readers to know the main feature of the magazine. Within the magazine cover for Dark Knight there is a lot of inconsistency for fonts used in titles and additional features, although it reflects Jokers erratic personality. For our own magazine we wanted to keep to a theme on the fonts we use. We liked how effective Total Film have used there titles making it clear for the reader. After looking at each magazine we saw a continuous trend in using a primary image to dominate the cover. This has inspired us for our cover and it will focus on Navtejs character as he plays a significant role in our storyline for the teaser trailer. It is also important to make sure there is a colour theme throughout the cover we create, as it has been effectively done for Tron Legacy magazine cover.

Drawn Draft
First Draft
This was our first draft for our poster, we incorporated the image of the gas mask character faded into the background. We also used the image of Ruislip lido on the backdrop, so it shows the trees, suggesting the forest of the deserted island.
The colours we wanted to use we types of browns and greens, colours of nature as this reflects on the location and the teaser trailer for Only Way Out. However we wanted the poster to show a darker side especially for the mask characters representing the game show. The gas mask eyes are blacked out. Yet he is still looking directly into the camera. There is a sense mystery and the image grabs our attention right away. We have the gas mask character above the image of the contestants. This implies to the audience that gas mask character holds a great signifies over the contestants. After trying numerous titles , we decided on this one and placed it above the characters. Therefore it does not get in the way of the images. Yet it is clear enough for us to read. |
Second Draft
With the second draft our image of the gas mask differs. We used the image of him looking down over the contestants. Therefore suggests his dominance over them. The three main contestants are also enlarged. So we are able to see more of their facial expression. The importance of having Navtej's character holding a prop of the knife instead of female characters who holds no weapon. Portrays Navtejs character relying on weapons as a form of strength and support.
As we see in the teaser trailer he becomes mentally unstable and ultimately the weaker character. The image of the gas mask character is a lot darker to before. As we believe it will have more of an impact and looks more superior then the previous picture we used. The We continued to have the billing block at the bottom of the poster as its out of the way from the primary images. However there are still aspects of our poster that are still missing. Especially titles ,for example our tagline and the actors and actresses names. We will have it placed in the same font as all other writing on the poster. |

Magazine Cover

Drawn Draft
First Draft
This is the draft that we have for our magazine so far, there are a lot of things that we have decided to do differently especially after taking in consideration what the typical magazine covers look like. The first thing we decided was to have the main colours consistent through the magazine, the main colours that we want to use is green and brown. They are the colours that also match in with our film, in our first draft we have put in a forest for the background seeing as that's what our setting is in the film.
In terms of titles, we have decided to change the font of the title, in this draft we were experimenting with the different fonts and where to place them. We knew that we wanted the title behind the primary image , to make it more dominating than everything else that is going on in the cover. So far for the features we have one picture of Brad Pitt, we are planning on adding to the features on our magazine, things like exclusive interviews and more pictures of what is involved inside our magazine cover. |
Second Draft
The second draft that we have done is completely different to what our first draft was like. Firstly, we have changed the main image and is no longer the gas mask character, its now the main character in our film. We thought this would look more appropriate instead of having the character with the gas mask and emphasise the dark side of this character in the magazine cover.
Another thing we have changed is the layout of the magazine title, we have kept the name but changed it in terms of the font and how it is laid out and kept the main image in front of the magazine title. We have also made certain words in green as that was one of the main colours we wanted to keep throughout. We do want to change the colour green and make it more darker as it stands out too much. The essential thing that is missing from this draft is our features which we are going to add in next, so far we have mentioned that we have the inside scoop on 30 new films, but we are going to add pictures of stars that are going to be in the magazine cover. |
