Enemy of the State - 1998
Action/Drama/Thriller
Production company: Touchstone Pictures
Production company: Touchstone Pictures
This is an aerial shot from the film Enemy of the State. This is the aerial shot taken before they zoom into the suspects' house. We analysed this aerial shot as we could use this kind of shot in our film opening to show the setting/location also we could use this aerial shot to show that the agents are tracking the lady. This shot is affective as it can be used in our film opening for a variety of reasons.

This is another shot taken from Enemy of the State. This is a point of view shot of a suspect running away and he is looking back as he is being chased by the police. In our film opening we could have a high angle and a point of view shot. A high angle shot could be used to illustrate superiority of the lady getting away and the point of view shot could be used to shows that the lady is aware that she is being followed.

The Bourne Ultimatum - 2007
Action/Crime/Thriller
Production company: Universal Pictures
Production company: Universal Pictures
This is snapshot from the opening of Bourne Ultimatum where the man is being hunted down; this is a close up from the back of the character to illustrating that he is looking out for the people following him also this close up shows the direction he is looking at and it shows a bit of his face expression. This demonstrates that he is being cautious about what is around him. We may portray this in our film opening to show the suspect is careful on who is following her and that she is aware of her surroundings.
|
This is a mid shot taken from the right hand-side showing the setting/location of the area which the man is in. Even though this shot is quite dull it is also a bit effective because it can show the body language of the person to imply the feelings and emotions as he is very cautious as he has to keep a look out as he is being followed; this shot also provides an insight of the location the film is set at, at that specific time. This scene influenced us to show emotions as well as the key location for our film opening.

Sherlock Holmes - 2009
Action/Adventure/Crime
Production company: Warner Bro. Pictures
Production company: Warner Bro. Pictures
This over the shoulder shot is taken from Sherlock Holmes. This shot would definitely be considered to be used in our work as it is showing the man hiding behind a wall and has his eyes set on his target which he is following. This shot clearly indicates his perception on where she is and that he is going after her. This resembles our ideas and is possibly an idea we can in-cooperate when we show the agents attempting to capture the suspect.
|
This is another close up shot from Sherlock Holmes. This close up shot is different from the close up we saw in Bourne Ultimatum as this shots camera positioning is different, this shows us that there is a variety of ways we can make close up shots interesting. This close up shot was used around a busy area to show the facial expression of the girl being followed and it proves that she is on to something suspicious. She is looking to the side which may show that she knows she’s being followed. This correlates with our idea because the lady will know she is being followed but in this case, it won’t be obvious that she is aware of the agents chasing her.

The Tourist - 2010
Action/Romance/Thriller
Production companies: GK Films and Spy Glass
Production companies: GK Films and Spy Glass
This shot from the opening of The Tourist showing a lady walking into a station with a crowd of people coming out. We chose to analyse this mid shot as it demonstrate that she would be lost within this crowd of people whilst she is being followed. Even though this is an ordinary mid-shot, it shows the setting/location and what is about to happen. This would be useful in our film opening as this idea of the suspect being followed into a tube station and her being lost within a crowd would create a mystery to find her, also in our opening it could show that she knows she is being followed and went into a busy station so she could camouflage with the people in the station so the agents can’t find her.
|
We chose this shot to analyse as the audience could clearly see that the lady was being followed and that she was being followed by a van. The positioning (blocking) of the lady makes it easier for the audience to see the van behind her. This clip shows an empty location however in our film opening we could have a busier location as the suspect would blend in with the people around her as it would make it difficult for the agents to look for her however we would also have both characters to be shown on scene for the audience so they can see that the agent is following the suspect.
|
This screenshot is showing the secret agents spying on the lady. We decided to analyse this close up shot as we can see that they are keeping track on their suspect (the lady) through their equipment inside the van. This would be useful in our idea as we could show people keeping track of our suspect however we could have an over the shoulder shot or point of view shot instead to see exactly what the agents are looking at and how they are following her also in our film opening we could also use a shot reverse shot to show that the lady is trying to escape.
|
This screenshot shows the lady on the train looking at the agents. We chose to analyse this screen shot because in our film opening we could have the lady discretely running away from the agents as she gets into a busy station. In this screen shot the character is smiling showing that she knew she had gotten away from the agents which is what we aim to show in our own production. We would show our suspect smiling at the end just before she disappears so the audience then find out she knew she was being followed from the beginning but throughout the opening we want to give hints to the audience that she knows she is being followed.

Salt - 2010
Action/Crime/Mystery
Production company: Columbia Pictures
Production company: Columbia Pictures
This screenshot is taken from Salt. This is an extreme close up of a suspect’s identity profile. We have chosen to analyse this clip as we could have an identity profile for our suspect to give some background information to our audience. This is also useful as it shows the audience in the beginning that this is the person they are looking for.
An identity profile could be used to show that our suspect doesn't work alone and she is the lead to the suspects already been taken however she isn't working alone, there is someone telling her what to do and the agents want to get all the information. |
This shot was chosen from Salt because this is the type of shot that needs to be used in our work. This shot shows the agents chasing the enemy, however in our case the agent wouldn't act upon the chase he would act subtle about following her, however, she would outsmarts them as she is much faster than the agents but when the agents start to lose her especially in the station the agent would have to run after her. This would increase the pace of our film opening as the tension is building up as the agents are more eager to capture the suspect.
|
This shot is taken from Salt and it shows a close-up of the lady's face expression
and this shot shows she is hiding from someone. In our film opening we could use this to show our suspects face expression. Throughout the beginning of the film opening our suspect would have a straight face to show the audience she doesn't know she is being followed until she sees her path to escape and that's when she has a smirk on her face and that's when she disappears from the agents. Furthermore the close up shot allows the reaction and emotions to be evident within the character and this is vital towards the end of our opening. |

Our inspiration
The Tourist is one of our main inspirations that was produced by Spyglass Entertainment and distributed by Columbia Pictures. Both of these institutions are going to be use in our film opening - this is later explained why we chose these particular institutions in our film opening below in the 'Production and distribution companies' section. The Tourist was a great inspiration as we wanted to create the whole spy look within our film opening. We are attempting to use the same kind of techniques and ideas on how they constructed their opening such as; using a tube station, having secret men follow a mysterious woman and having a van with agents spying on the woman. The institutions we have picked would be great for our film opening as they produced similar films to our own idea. |
Salt is another one of our inspirations for our film opening that was produced by Relativity Media and distributed by Columbia Pictures. Salt is a huge inspiration for our film opening as their main character who is being chased by the CIA agents is a female and majority of the agents are males. In our film opening the suspect who is being followed is a woman and the men are the agents. Salt is a good inspiration as we tried to portray similar ideas in our film opening and also the shots that were taken in this film were very effective and it gave us an idea on how to film our opening to make it effective.

Production and distribution Companies
Spyglass Entertainment
(Production company)
Spyglass Entertainment is another popular American film production company which have produced many films based around our idea, or have glimpses of our thoughts in their own movies with similar genre as ours. Spyglass Entertainment have produced many blockbuster films, which are based around our same target audience as well, which helps us get an idea on what to include in our film opening so it matches our target audience. Spyglass Entertainment produced our one of our inspirations for our film opening ideas, The Tourist. The Tourist was also distributed by Columbia Pictures which was the first institution we had planned to use for our film opening.

Also produced...
Columbia Pictures
(Distribution company)
The distribution company that we would like to use in our film opening is Columbia Pictures. Columbia Pictures is a popular American film production and distribution company and they are owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment. We chose to use this production and distribution company to distribute our film opening as they have produced many films that are similar to our idea and genre. Salt - the film we looked at for our film opening ideas is also distributed by Columbia Pictures. Salt is about a CIA agent going on the run after a defector accuses one of their spies of being a Russian spy. This is an ideal example of why we chose to use Columbia Pictures as Salt represents the whole spy/mystery feature we would like to include in our own film opening, so choosing Columbia Pictures was a suitable idea.

Question 1:
This graph informs me that this questionnaire was mainly completed by the male audience however looking at the graph; the graph tells me that there is not a big difference between males and females asked within the questionnaire.
|
Question 2:
This graph illustrates that our main target audience is between the ages of 21 - 30 which shows that we need to make our film suitable for our audience however the graph also shows that the second highest target audience is between 12 - 20 years old. In conclusion to this I think it would be suitable if we aimed our film opening for over 18's which would give us a larger audience and a variety of opinions from them through our questionnaire.
|
Question 3:
The majority people asked in this survey were Indians. This is
mainly due to the majority of Indian people in our area or school surveyed. |
Question 4:
This graphs shows that the three popular film genres found through this questionnaire were Action, Thriller and Mystery. This gives us a range of genres and sub-genres to include and exploit in our film opening. These results have changed our idea slightly as we can see that the audience prefer action and mystery.
|
Question 5:
A large amount of people asked in the questionnaire chose medium and fast pace as their preferred tempo for a film opening. I concluded that as the majority people chose action as their favourite film genre and most action scenes would contain violence and chase scenes which would be all shown in fast pace but sometimes a bit slower than fast pace. In our film opening we were going to have the scenes slow pace to create tension however these results show that most of the audience would prefer fast pace.
|
Question 6:
In this graph I can see that most people wouldn't mind a cliff hanger in the opening of a film. I can also see that people would also prefer
having a cliff hanger in an opening of a film as well as it creates tension and makes the audience want to watch more of the film. In our film opening we weren't sure if we wanted a cliff hanger but from the results we have chosen to have a slight cliff hanger at the end as most people didn't mind if there was a cliff hanger or not as the results were very close. |
Question 7:
This graph shows me that the majority of people would like the character to be introduced in the opening of a film as they can get a first impression of their main character and get to know them. In our opening we are going to introduce the main character as most of the audience would want to know who their main character is.
|
Question 8:
From this graph I can see that most people would like an establishing shot in the opening of a film so they know where the film is set however most people don't actually mind as later on you would able to figure out where the film is set. I think in our film opening we could potentially use an establishing shot as it would be useful.
|
Question 9:
We gave a few options in the questionnaire on which film out of the options below they had seen the latest. Most of the people said they saw Salt and Sherlock Holmes the latest. This gave us a good indication on what kind of film the audience were mainly interested in and that was mystery.
|
Question 10:
This graph illustrates that most people rather have a male main character rather than a female character. However I concluded that the majority of the people asked were male and they prefer a male head role as a hero and in most films a hero is mainly played by males however it would be different if the main character was female so in our film opening we would go for a female main character.
